Panmure Historical Society
Panmure Historical Society
The inaugural meeting was held in December 2003. We started off with about 9 members and have slowly grown to the present 35 paid up members.
The Aims & Objects of the Society are to research and record the history of Panmure, to promote public appreciation of the history and conservation of the places of historic interest in the area and to collect, conserve, operate and display items of historical importance.
Over the years with the help of the Auckland City Council, and Mt Wellington Charitable Trust, we have produced two “Walk the Panmure Heritage Trail” brochures and placed bronze plaques at some of the places in the first brochure. We were also able to contract a history student to set up our Archives for us and funding was received for office and recording equipment. We have a file at the Panmure Library which can be accessed by people looking for items of local historical interest.
The Tamaki Community Board very kindly helped us with a grant to help develop our logo, investigate incorporation and hire costumes for heritage displays.
Council invited us to recommend several hundred street names for new roads in the area, starting with the Stonefields development of the Quarry and the development of Sylvia Park. To date several of these have been used.
When the Otahuhu Historical Society heard we were up and running they handed over to our care, some of the many photos and items of interest of our area.
Our first involvement with the Auckland Heritage Festival began in 2004. We had been working with Auckland City to have the Stone Cottage open for the public to visit. On 3rd July 2006 we signed a contract with ACC to operate and manage the Cottage on their behalf. We provide the staff on the 2nd Sunday of each month and the Cottage is open between 11am and 3pm. The contract allows for the Cottage to be open on other days, and for groups to be shown through privately. We are open several days during the Auckland Heritage Festival. Our Guided Walk also begins and ends at the Cottage on the 3 Sundays during the Festival.
A Video Competition was held to coincide with the 2009 Festival. The schools in the local Pathways Inc. were invited to make a video on “Early Panmure”, which will hopefully be viewed on Triangle TV. Once again we are indebted to Mt Wellington Charitable Trust for funding the prizes for this competition. The entries received were of excellent quality and it is encouraging to see such work coming from our young students.
We have been working hard to try to get Loombs Hotel designated as an Historic Building, but so far to no avail.
The Society took part in the 2009 Christmas Parade and Festival in Panmure, with a group of ladies dressed in their new costumes.
We keep in contact with our members with a Newsletter about 3-4 times a year. This could be more regular if we were able to find a sponsor. Annual Membership is only $10.00 per person but any donations towards the aims and objects of the Society would be most appreciated.
